Blood Divided - Book two in the Soul Born Saga

I am very happy to announce that the sequel to SOUL BORN, book two in my dark epic fantasy series, BLOOD DIVIDED is now out in print.

There exists an ancient elven proverb, dating before the time of man. Life and death, like day and night, meet at a point where they blend into one. It is that brief moment when anything is possible.

There was a time when four sparks of life burned brighter than the sun itself. Megan was born with power, Lucien born with station. Autumn was born full of life, while Nathan was entwined with death.

Peace has come and gone... The conflicts of old have returned-rejuvenated and driven. This is the beginning of the end. The children of Karn have come of age, and now they will take part in shaping the fate of Illyia.

Will they join forces, or with blood will they be divided?

Blood Divided takes place twenty years after Soul Born and it follows the next generation: Opal's children and Tala's children. This story will introduce new characters, but will also keep you up to date with your favorites from book one. Some of the flashbacks in Blood Divided will give hints to what has occurred between books, and tease what is to come in book three.

I like to say that the Soul Born Saga is as much the tragic tale of Opal as it is a story of survival for Tala, the other main character. Of course, in Blood Divided you will meet another main player... Vasche. His life was shaped by events in book one and (spoiler alert) he will be a force to be reckoned with in book threee.

Here is a tiny excerpt from pages 5-6;

Autumn jogged through the city on her way to the harbor, her movements so precise and graceful, that the hundreds of people around could not help but stare. Autumn was an incredible beauty. Her half-elf blood gave her an exquisiteness nearly matching that of her mother’s. Her long blonde curly hair had a slight tint of green that caught the sun and sparkled like precious jewels on sunny days like this one. Unlike her brother, Autumn looked more elven than human. It was a small blessing, as this helped her gain more acceptance from both the human and elven communities. The only visible human characteristic she displayed was her brown eyes. True elves were never born with brown eyes. It was a detail she good-naturedly referred to as her curse.

Autumn did not have to wear a crown; traveling merchants, soldiers, tavern owners, and farmers alike all knew who she was and always greeted her kindly with a smile and cheery hello. All of Kel Tora treasured the princess, and she loved them in return, donating both her time and coin when possible.

“The ships are almost here. You better hurry, Princess Autumn!” a farmer yelled to her as she jogged up to his stand.

Autumn snatched up an apple in her left hand as she ran past. Still moving, she twisted around long enough to give the farmer a quick wave and a giggle. As she faced forward, another farmer pulling a goat through the crowds blocked her path. Unshaken, Autumn continued to run toward the obstacle before her. In her eyes there was no quandary; instead, it was a perfect opportunity to show off one of her greatest skills. As Autumn was only three steps from colliding with the goat, she bent down, planting her hands in the dirt. Whipping her legs up over her body, the princess performed a handspring over the farm animal.

In her mind, it was nothing but a simple move she had mastered long ago, but the crowds around her saw it as truly amazing. As she planted her feet firmly on the ground and centered her weight to regain balance, the citizenry who had watched her began to applaud.

Autumn stopped her race through town for just a moment, and took a quick bow before jogging toward the harbor.

“That girl is phenomenal,” a farmer stated to a young customer at his stand.

Short Story Accepted for New Anthology to be released at WHC!

A couple of months ago I was invited to submit a piece of flash fiction to a new anthology. I submitted two and today I found out which one was accepted. The story is called SHE. HER. YOU. And it is new to the world. It is actually the intro to a horror novel I was writing, but never finished. Funny how that works.

Rewatching Star Trek Deep Space Nine. Wait how old is Sisko?

Star Trek Deep Space Nine has to be my favorite show of the 1990s. It aired from 1993-1999. Yes, Buffy the Vampire Slayer was on in the 90s, but late. So I mean a show that ran entirely in the 1990s, and during a time where I had just finished high school and was in college. Deep Space Nine is also my favorite of the Star Trek television shows. I loved that it was serialized, in fact, this was the first show that I watched that I realized was serialized and it’s where I learned the term. Now I prefer all my shows to be formatted as such.

I was a loyal follower of the show, saw every episode, and then saw them all again and again in repeats. I have said in interviews that I used to watch repeats Deep Space Nine on some local PA-NJ channel on a small B+W TV in my office when writing early drafts of SOUL BORN. I loved the show that much!

It has been a few years since the show has been on the air. So when Netflix offered up all 176 episodes I was thrilled and started right up watching them. At the moment I am finished season 1 and 2 and I am excited to begin season 3, as it starts one of the biggest story-arcs.

You know, its funny, when I was younger I never really thought about the ages of the actors playing my favorite characters on shows, but now, at 37, I find myself obsessed with it. Like while watching Hercules this summer, I realized Kevin Sorbo and I were the same age… well… now we are… kinda. See, when I watched Hercules I was in my early twenties and he was in his late 30s. I had no idea how old he was then, but now when I watch it he and I are the same age. So I kinda relate more to him now.

My obsession with finding out the ages of the actors carried right over into Deep Space Nine, when during the first episode I was like… Hey, I wonder how old Kira is?

When Grandma comes to dinner you have a Nana Visitor? Get it... yeah I didn't either.

(funny story, I meet her at a Star Trek Convention in Valley Forge, PA when I was probably 20 years old. She teased my friend Chris... I wonder how old I thought she was then. Actually, I don’t think I cared)

Anyway I started my research.

Let's pick Star Trek Deep Space Nine season two as the place to start. The year was 1994. I was 20.

Ben Sisko- played by Avery Brooks would have been 48 years old during season two.

--There is no way I would have imagined he was 48 back then, or even now as I watch it. He looks so young!

Dax- played by Terry Farrell would have been 31 years old during season two.

--I guess this makes sense, as back then I think I assumed everyone on the show was in their 30s for some reason.

O’Brien – played by Colm Meaney would have been 41 years old during season two.

--Re-watching it now, I think there is a conversation early in season two where Dax and the Doctor guess that O’Brien is not 40 yet. That's funny now that I know he was actually 41. I am watching Hell on Wheels, which Colm is in, and this guy does not age.

Kira – played by Nana Visitor would have been 37 during season two.

---That shocked me. I would have imagined she was the same age as Terry Farrell. I am 37 now, and watching season 2 I have a hard time imagining Nana and I are the same age, she looks much younger. And since when was she a red head? I remembered her with brown hair... so strange.

Bashir – Played by Alexander Siddig would have been 29 years old.

Other than Jake and Nog, he would have been the closest to my age. This I find hard to believe too, as I would have figured he was older than 29. At least he acted older.

Why does this matter to me now more than before? I guess because I am getting older and find it easier to relate to older characters? I do remember a time, in high school, when I found out all the original 90210 actors where in their mid twenties, except that one guy who was in his thirties. I was really disturbed that such older actors were all playing teenagers.

ah, the sweet comfort of the 80s...

I mean, Magnum P.I. felt like a show about a guy in his mid thirties and well... Tom Selleck was in his mid thirties. That worked for me as a kid. Now Paul Wesley, on the Vampire Diaries plays a 17 year old vampire. He is currently 29 years old. Hmm… in about six years the guy will be old enough to be his own father.

Now that is weird.

OK, I was a little starstruck at my first big multi-author signing event.

It's funny how one week can be so different than the last. Last weekend I was sitting next to Brent Weeks at the fifth annual Powell's Authorfest. Yes, that Brent Weeks! (http://www.brentweeks.com/) And now? Now, I am sitting in my darkened home office listening to Overkill, wondering how much more editing I will get done today and when I can get back to playing Skyrim.

How was the Authorfest? It was very exciting. Tons of people showed up... for Brent. :) Man, that guy rocked it. He killed it. He dominated. I watched... in awe. At times I was like, dude, I want to be you. Well, that was before I met Peter, who I really want to be like. LOL.

Brent was super-friendly and had a line of fans that kept him busy the entire event. One girl looked like she was going to pass out from the overdose of glee she felt when meeting Brent. I swear it was a sight to see. It was not until the end that I got a chance to talk to Brent a few minutes, and guess what we talked about? Skyrim! Good guess!

I'm not just an author at home, I play one in the real world.

On the other side of me, another legend... Elizabeth Ann Scarborough (not pictured). I know what some of you are thinking, why would you want to sit between two such popular authors? Well, I requested sitting next to Brent and between the two I learned a lot. It helped me prepare for the next signing I have.

I must say, the Powell's staff handled the event professionally and did an amazing job keeping books stocked, checking up on us authors, and keeping the masses moving. I would 100% suggest to anyone who has not attended an Authorfest before to hit next years. I hope to be there.

So I said this on Facebook earlier, but I need to repeat it. Ever since leaving PA, I have not had a chance to connect with other like-minded authors, and being at this event I was able to feel some of the camaraderie I have not felt since sitting in a room with Jonathan Maberry, Don Lafferty and Al Sirois. When the show was over I had a chance to finally met Peter Orullian, who I connected with instantly by picking on Brent's lack of fantasy author recommended hair style (hint: ponytail).

So I knew of Peter's work before the event, but had not had a chance to read any of it. (http://www.orullian.com/) See, I did my homework and read the bios of all the other authors in attendance, and well... Peter is the MAN! This guy is everything I want to be:

Heavy Metal Rocker...check.

XBOX employee...check.

Tor Author... oh, hell-yeah-check!

Three very dangerous minds in Dark Fantasy.

I hope to someday get a chance to hang with these guys again. Had my head been in the game, I might have asked them and theirs to join me and mine for dinner, but as I say in my title of this entry, I was a little starstruck and being the "new guy" there I did not want to push it. Dark Water: Beaming Smile Read and Acted Out? YES!

Hi all,

I am so honored to tell you about this one. My short story (novelette) Dark Water: Beaming Smile was chosen to be acted out / read on The Drama Pod for one of its Halloween shows. My story was acted out by Nicole Villacres, who really captures the lead character, a woman stuck on the roof of her house during a flood. I am impressed with this actress on so many levels.

Dark Water: Beaming Smile is my first real attempt for a Bram Stoker Award, so I am hoping it is read, listened to and enjoyed by many. Please feel free to comment here, or send me emails about this story.

Seriously, when I listened to it I was so excited and freaked out. I mean it's surreal hearing your work read like this... in an old radio "War of the Worlds" or "The Shadow Knows" style. So cool!

So, I was having a bad day yesterday until I found this in my email box. Letters like this one... they are what make all the hours and hours of writing worth it. I just wanted to share this with you all.

I just finished Soul Born the other night and I wanted to thank you for a wonderfully entertaining novel. It kept me up way too late several nights because I just didn't want to stop reading. I love how the motives for each character slowly become clearer through the book. The shades of gray each character is colored with adds a depth beyond the trite good/evil duality found so often in fantasy. I found the part describing Karn's revelation of his past and the fate of his family to be especially poignant. I'm really looking forward to the next book in the series.

I want to write a good review on Amazon for your book, but I'm exhausted just trying to figure out how to word it right...considering that simple task and how it makes me feel, I really don't know how you manage to write a whole f*&cking novel! Hell, I think I've rewritten just this email three times! Anyway, I'll try to come up with something worthy.

I love the cover of my next book. I really do. It has the most amazing reds, and Dan really captured the character of Megan, Opal's daughter. The other day someone said this looked like a female "Beast Master", I think that's a cool comparison. :)

Last year I ran into some real problems with the editor for Soul Born being sick for an extended amount of time and then running up against the deadline. Always fun when you get your final edits to work on weeks before its due. This year, my book is already in the hands of the new editor and she is working on it during June. The text is going to be so much cleaner! In the meantime, I am writing book three and another novel.

Hi all,

It's been a big month for me. Two short stories I sold last year were finally released into printed anthologies, and just yesterday a short story I wrote went up for sale as an e-book on the brand new, wickedly evil, Hellfire Publishing website.

Two NEW Anthologies out with my Short Stories inside!

April is turning out to be an exciting month for me. So far I have two big releases, both printed anthologies.

Anthology of Ichor III - ISBN:978-1460938010

Anthology of Ichor III: Gears of Damnation is published by UnEarthed Press. They accepted my short story A BATTLE OF EGO, which is in the steampunk and horror genres. A BATTLE OF EGO pits Thomas Edison vs. Nikola Tesla. It’s a patent war and Tesla has steam-powered zombies! Oh no! Well let’s give Edison some credit; he’s got a few tricks up his sleeves too.

I really hope to get some reviews on this story. First, it was a ton of fun to write. I did hours of research and learned some interesting facts about history that I was unaware of. Also, it’s my first steampunk story, so I am curious how I did.

Anthology of Ichor III is a massive anthology, at over 560 pages! That’s huge! I'm waiting for my author copy to arrive, so I have not read any of the other stories. Last year I was commissioned to write a horror/erotic short story for a new anthology called Too Much Boogie: Erotic Remixes of the Dirty Blues, edited by Cole Riley. The theme was Blues Music, something I knew nothing about. Well, an old mentor of mine once said, if you are asked to write something you always say “yes”. This was a first for me, and a true honor, but let me tell you... it feels so good to be asked to write and submit a story.

Well, I knew I could write a kick-ass short story so I jumped at the opportunity. I created a horror story with an erotic edge to it called, MOTHER’S MILK. I actually wrote it twice, the first draft was almost all horror, and way too long. The second draft felt right, much smoother and to the point.

MOTHER’S MILK is about a blues musician living in a rundown abandoned motel with other Katrina survivors. Blessed with a golden voice the man slowly rises up, but not without a little help from a neighbor. “Mother” has cast a blood-magic spell on him. Read the story and find out what happens… but be aware its rated R.

TV shows of 2001. It's been a long road… getting from there to 2011.

Hi all,

One of my shows is ending this year and it makes me sad. Not entirely because I will miss this show that I have been watching for 10 years, but it’s sort of the end of a TV era for me. Let me explain.

Smallville Season 1

Back in 2001 when Smallville premiered, I was living in my first home, a townhouse in a town called Jamison, PA. It was a brand new development and a brand new home. The place was small but cool, with three levels, the basement being the best man cave I have ever dwelled in.

2001 was a great year for Television, and my three VCRs were recording shows constantly. I became a master of VCR programming at this point in my life. There was NO way I was gonna miss one of my shows… and there were a lot of them.

Buffy Season 5

Buffy the Vampire Slayer was on in 2001, it was the fifth season, which is a great one although not my favorite. I like the fourth season most because of the Initiative...I know people don't always agree with that statement... sorry. Anyway, the season ending in 2001 gave us the penultimate episode as we witnessed the death of Buffy.

Angel Season 2

Angel was in its second season, again not my favorite of this series either, but a good one. I mean we did get to see Angel and Darla get it on... hey now! I like the last season of Angel the best... to many good things happen to name. (Angel was turned into a Muppet for God Sake.)

Alias Season 1

Alias began its first season in 2001 and so did Star Trek Enterprise. I watched both and enjoyed them both. I also remember breaking my foot in karate while sparring and then going to a neighbor's house and watching Alias while icing my foot. Ah, the good old days. Well, not all good, I mean I was still deeply missing Star Trek Deep Space 9, my favorite of all the Star Trek series ever… I remember crying during the last episode. Yes, I said crying. Sniff…Sniff. DS9 (1993-1999) I miss you!

Star Trek Enterprise

Would you believe Xena was in its last season during 2001? Yeah, I loved the Hercules and Xena shows, but for some reason I missed the last seasons of both. Sure a bunch of months separated the end of Xena and the beginning of those other shows, but it was still the same year.

I think the most important premiere in 2001, for me, was a show that became a huge cult favorite of mine. I mean I love this show so much, the music, the actors, the plot, the episodes… I still watch and re-watch them… Mutant-X.

Mutant-X Season 1

In 2001 we were blessed with Smallville, Buffy, Angel, Alias, Xena, Star Trek Enterprise and Mutant-X. All of those shows have come to an end… the last standing being Smallville. See now why it ending makes me sad? It IS the end of an era. Watching that show reminds me of an easier time in my life. A time where I had a bunch of friends who came over and played video games, role playing and board games in my basement. Letting go of this one show is like severing a connection to my past.

With Smallville ending, so will those days where SO many great shows were on TV at once.

I mean BSG has come and gone, so has LOST. ROME only had two seasons… What do I watch now? I watch Vampire Diaries and True Blood. I very much enjoy the STARZ Spartacus series, but how long can that last? They killed everyone off! I watch some reality shows like the Amazing Race, but I need good scripted programs and I prefer they be serialized. I was a fan of the X-Files, like most people, but it was "monster of the week"…. wait… when did X-Files end?

2002? Really? Wow…. HOLY SHIT! Then add that to my list above. I was watching X-Files in 2001 too, but I cannot remember it. It was season 8 of 9... Oh yeah, a Dogget Season... meh...

I wonder what we have to look forward to as TV watchers? Something Sci-Fi or Fantasy that will last more than 5 or 6 seasons?

Poor Legend of the Seeker….You were fun while you lasted.

Well back to writing. I have 3 books to finish this year, and not a whole lot of TV shows to distract me.

Publishers Marketplace Top Ten Writers. Week of Feb 21st.

If you are not already familiar with Publishers Marketplace its a great site for authors, agents and publishers. I visit it everyday and look at the most current book deals. I like to see what agents are selling and what author are having great luck. Publishers Marketplace is the old finger on the pulse of the literary market. Well, if you look closely at the screen-shot above I cropped it down to a small section which sits on the right side of the site's homepage.

Look at me Mom, I'm in the top ten!

The middle of last week my name popped up at number ten and rose up to the sixth place position where it rested for two days! How in the world did that happen? Well, my guess is that it was a result of my current round of submissions. I'm actively searching for an agent to represent my new series of Urban Fantasy / Paranormal Thriller books. The first book is done and ready to go, so I've been pitching it to agents. I guess some of those agents looked me up on Publishers Marketplace, which is great! I have had an author page there since 2007.

March begins another very busy month for me. While working on submissions I will be attempting to finish a new book over the next three months. I'm also planning on pitching some ideas to a few comic book companies. I just figure, I have been reading comics since the 80's and back in the 90's tried to break into the business as an inker; so it makes sense that I would turn one of my many creative concepts into a comic series.

Awards - Tis the Season! Thanks All!

Growing up I always wanted to win a trophy. Who didn't? It wasn't until I was 29 years old that I was rewarded with two trophies at a martial arts tournament, one for a 2nd and another for a 3rd place win. Couple years later as my buddies and I were having XBox LAN party tournaments, I went and had custom trophies made for the winners. It's always nice to be rewarded for your hard work. Even if it's slamming your friends in the face with rockets. Or in my case, having Chris gun me down over and over and over again.

This week I received two awards from entries in the Preditors and Editors (P&E) Reader's Poll.

My novel SOUL BORN won best SF/F novel for 2010.

And my short story ENDING SUMMER NIGHTS came in Top Ten (9th place) in the horror short story category.

Again, I want to thank everyone who voted for me. I am especially proud of the Bram Stoker Award recommendation I received this year too. Maybe next year I will get a nomination!

Look what I still have...

Dungeons and Dragons modules from my collection

Packed away safely, years ago, I must have 50 or more D&D modules all in great condition. Someday I would love to read all of my old D&D books, manuals and modules again. From time to time I pick up my the old Monster Manual or Deities and Demigods books just to page through.

Hard bound D&D books, hell yeah!

When I was a kid I was totally in love with all the artwork on and inside these books, and to date I am still a fan. I look at these books and get all inspired... I mean look at the cover for Beyond the Crystal Cave (first pic above), I could write a whole story based on that painting alone. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, well I will give you a three thousand word short story easily! Maybe the D&D folks should have a writing contest from my idea right here... hmmm...

I remember these sets being so hard to find, always sold out.

I even have a small collection of lead D&D figurines. Yep, the lead ones from the original batches made in the 1980s. If I had a dollar for everytime my Mom complained that they were made of lead... What did she think I was doing with these figures? Chewing on them? No that was Chris!

For some reason, I just cannot bring myself to sell or throw out any of my old RPG games. I still have all my Top Secret, Star Frontiers and Car Wars books. Okay, to be honest, I have a ton of Car War stuff. Car War remains the RPG game that I had the most fun playing growing up, and by growing up I mean I was still playing Car Wars with my friends: Andy, Chris, Bob, and Sean way into our mid 20s. Holla!

Guest Post: Seán Gardner on Blazing Trails, Friendship and Silly RPG Storylines

Through the years I have had many friends, but those I would consider family number only in the single digits. This man is true kindred.

I would like to introduce to you all, Seán Gardner, creative genius.

Kevin had discovered it, White Wolf’s very first release of Vampire: The Masquerade, and quickly pointed me in the right direction (this was often how our friendship worked, with he the trailblazer, discovering new places, and I the surveyor, going to those places and learning all the details). I bought my own copy, soaking up the atmosphere. Then I bought the Players Guide, eating the history of the WW universe like popcorn. We quickly realized that Vampire would become a new Saturday night option for our little coven of friends, who spent our freest evening playing games of all sorts well into Sunday morning. The others had been big D&D players before I joined the group, and for Kevin this new discovery was the next iteration.

For me, though, it would really be my first experience with book-and-paper based role playing, and as I often did when something took my interest I really threw myself in with complete abandon. I bought nearly every new guide that WW released. One about werewolves? Check! Ghosts? Check! Mummies? Check! City sourcebooks, universe histories, vampire clans…check, check, check!

There were a few test runs and the Storyteller role, WW’s title for the facilitator of the tale, would be alternately filled by Kevin and I while the others were to immerse themselves in the story without worrying about the details. As a few bizarre storylines unfolded, I plotted an outline of where I wanted to steer the group, and I became the primary Storyteller for out Vampire game. I went as far as to sketch portraits of non-player characters, record as many details about the group’s characters as I could (being able to introduce elements of the story that would play on character weaknesses would always lead to memorable moments), drew maps of key locations…yeah, I got obsessive.

We had jokingly decided that Philly icon Dick Clark was a vampire, because in reality the man never seemed to age, and that he was likely to be a very powerful and old creature…he would be the vampire prince of Philadelphia, a dark haven for vampires more evil than the norm. And to antagonize him, our characters would turn his friend, Ed McMahon, into a vampire and make him the puppet prince of Camden, to control as we pleased.

Sure, the story was silly, and probably not where I would have chosen to take it had I been given a blank slate, but I learned a great deal from this experience: sometimes the story and the characters drive themselves, and they take you places that you cannot deny.

I rediscovered this many years later when I, always an aspiring and undisciplined writer, participated in National Novel Writing Month (again, pointed in the right direction by my supportive friend). I struggled early on, as I tried to hold everything on the path I wanted it to take, but as I dropped plotlines that didn’t matter and let the story unfold organically, I cruised to the finish line and managed a personal achievement that has my surveyor tendencies flowing in full again.

The dynamic of my friendship with Kevin, separated by years and miles, has survived intact and as the stories have stacked up in my head through the years without seeing the keyboard, I get to follow the trail he’s blazed again, and someday hope to see my name on the front of a book cover.

My Favorite Fantasy Movies

It's no secret I am a big fan of movies of all genres. One of my favorite things is to go to a movie theater and catch a really amazing, and thought provoking film. Through the years my tastes have shifted from side to side, and now I tend to enjoy historical dramas the most. Films like The New World and Red Cliff, which tell the story of an event with amazing cinematography. Don't get me wrong, I still love Star Trek and will go see a silly Comic Book movie at the drop of a hat. I just like to see things that push the limits, like The Fountain - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0414993/, wow what a great movie, and none of my friends have seen it... weird.

1. The Brotherhood of the Wolf - This is my all time favorite fantasy film. It's a great combination of historical events, legends, and fantasy. It takes the tale of the Beast of Gevaudan and spins it a bit adding some elements of fantasy while grounding it in the reality of the time period. This movie is shot so beautifully that you need to watch it twice just to take in all of the amazing scenery and awesome directorial skills. Yes, it's a foreign film, and that does not matter to me. I saw this one in the theater back in 2001, in French, and walked out being completely amazed. I try and watch it once a year, it's that good. If you have not seen it , I give it the highest recommendation. The action is amazing, the story is deep and fulfilling and it has a very scary monster.

2. Excalibur - was probably one of the first fantasy movies I saw as a young child. I was probably not even ten years old when I watched it with my friend Matt (the same friend who got me into D&D and you see playing Atari with me below) I have to imagine that every fantasy fan that has seen Excalibur is haunted by the imagery and music of this film like I am. I can hear the characters like Morgana spit out their lines, like her incantation, in my head. The music when the fog comes in, playing over and over, shiny blood soaked armor, knee deep mud, and the look of pain on the characters faces, it's all right there in my mind's eye whenever I call on it. This movie sparked a long, ten or more years, of research into the myth and legend of King Arthur. I read the Volgate Cycle, Le Morte d'Arthur and Mists of Avalon. This movies is no doubt one of the reasons I write fantasy.

3.Night Watch - is more of a fantasy horror, but still one of my favorites in the genre. Another foreign film, maybe America does not know how to make a good fantasy flick? hmmm...anyway... Night Watch is the story of supernatural beings that have been battling throughout time. The Day Watch polices the good guys and the Night Watch polices the bad guys, both work so neither group crosses the line and breaks a truce. In these movies you have swords and sorcery, vampires, and shape-shifters; all sorts of fun. The film is so interesting and filmed so well by director Timur Bekmambetov, that you get sucked in. The opening sequence, shot in a medieval time period, is great, but the move takes place in current days. Its based on a series of books too!

I can list movies all day.

I loved Curse of the Golden Flower, 300 and Highlander. I even enjoyed Hawk the Slayer http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080846/, which was funky-fun late 70's disco music fantasy... but hey... who am I to judge!

Kevin's First Adventure!

Adventure for Atari 2600

Back in the early-early 1980s my dad bought me an Atari 2600. I credit this moment, and this system, as being the birth of my love for video games. I still remember most of the games, and have a small collection of them unopened and sitting displayed on a shelf in my media room. I especially like the ones made by Atari because of the amazing painted cover art. (like Atari Video Olympics)

Here is a photo of me and my friend Matt playing what looks like Raiders of the Lost Ark on Atari. This is the earliest photo of me as a gamer. I was probably 6-7 year old at the time, and yes I was rocking an awesome bowl cut.

Of all the Atari games the one that stands out the most to me is Adventure. I guess you could say it was one of the first, if not THE first Action RPG game. Castles, mazes, swords and treasure, oh yeah, count me in. Your quest was to find the chalice and return it to your golden castle while avoiding hungry dragons and a kleptomaniac bat.

I will never forget the day I was sitting at Matt’s house and figured my way around the one maze to the white castle. We were so excited! He and I thought we had discovered something no one else ever had. Call the press!

One of the things I loved so much about Adventure was that it was different each time you played. The chalice was in different locations and the items you needed to find it were too. Just when you think you had what you needed the darn bat would steal it or you would run around the corner and right into one of the dragon’s mouths.

Everyone who played Adventure had a love-hate relationship with those dragons. I mean they looked funny like a dragon-duck hybrid and they had a hollow, see through stomach, which coincidentally was a perfect fit for your little square character. Hey, ever kill the dragon as he swallowed you? Yeah, me too and oh… I could just sit there for hours and watch myself wiggle in the dead dragon’s stomach while being flown around by the bat. Priceless.

Adventure http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adventure_(Atari_2600) was one of the first fantasy games I played and no doubt the spark for a long love of the genre. I just wish I could make a SOUL BORN game for Atari 2600, that would be rad!

My Favorite Buffy Episodes Part 2

Buffy changes gears a few times in seasons 5-7. Lots of big moments come to pass: Joyce’s death, the question of marriage, what role Giles plays as mentor, Buffy is alive and then dead… and yes who is sleeping with who. Tough times for the Scooby Gang. Of the last three seasons these are my favorite episodes and why.

Season 5 - Buffy vs. Dracula is an all around fun time. I love how excited all the characters get when they find out that Dracula is real. That he owes Spike money is an added plus. The whole Bram Stoker storyline may seem old, but it is handled with enough goofiness that it's new again. Xander as Reinfield is priceless, regardless of the crazy syphilis.

During that season we get a very emotional, creepy and heart breaking episode. The Body, may be the best written and most powerful hour of the entire series. It's gripping and so real it should come with a disclaimer at the end that no Kristine Sutherland's were harmed during the making. Hats off to Joss Whedon, writing and directing this one.

I would love to say this is my favorite season, but it comes in a close 2nd. Very close. I mean who doesn't love it when Anya steps out of the shadows with some of the best lines. For example, when the Buffybot, asks her how her money is, the look on her face is just awesome. Yes, I do enjoy the Buffybot episode a lot, Intervention, is written by Jane Espensen and Spike and the Buffybot have some great... um... scenes... together...

Season 6 - I enjoy the Once more with Feeling Musical episode because it's teeming with humor and sex. The episode where the nerds of doom join up and test Buffy is fun too with some great lines. "Quick Jonathan grab your magic bone!" My next favorite ep, for the humor, is Tabula Rasa. I enjoy seeing who all the characters THINK they are when they have their memories erased. That Spike thinks he's Giles's son, and that they hate one another is hilarious. Seeing Red brought a massive amount of realism into the show, like when Joyce died. It has the death of Tara and the birth of Dark Willow. A lot for one ep.

Season 7 - From Beneath has one of the best Spike moments of the series. In the church at the end of the ep, he it stammering, babbling and speaking the most real he ever has, all while trying to tell Buffy he got his spark back. He is so tortured and damaged, that the dialogue is amazing. Very powerful scene.

The season overall is a bit of a downer. Too much gloom and doom for our hero Buffy. I am split between two, when having to pick a favorite. Dirty Girls, which brings back my favorite slayer Faith, is one of my picks for Season 7. Dirty Girls, written by Goddard, has one of the best visuals of the season when they show faith killing a Vulcan. (yes from Star Trek)

Lines like...

“You bit Andrew.”

“ Who?”

“ Tucker's Brother.”

“ Oh....”

And “It eats you starting with your bottom.” Get big laughs. Storyteller, is my 2nd pick for best ep. As its focus is on Andrew and all his awkward and funny terms, like Buffy - Slayer of the Vampyr. Good one Andrew, I hope you survive the final battle! And yes, Jonathan Archer is cool.

NaNoWriMo Cover Art!

My first year doing the NaNoWriMo and I was equally worried about the cover art as I was the actual novel. Having a background in graphic art and digital art, I was concerned that creating a cover would eat up a day or two of the NaNo month. Yesterday, I needed a break from writing so I decided to work up the cover. Since NaNo is all about writing and not editing, jut getting the words out, I designed my cover in the same fashion. After spending about 5 mins gathering elements, I took 15 minutes and cooked up this cover for my story THE MAIZE QUEEEN. I hope you like it! For a 15 minute job, I am pretty happy.

NaNoWriMo has been a great distraction from my grueling wait for my debut novel SOUL BORN to be released. It should be available to everyone around Thanksgiving, and yes, I will be giving thanks for it finally coming out!

My Favorite Buffy Episodes Part 1

It's no secret that Joss Whedon is one of my favorite writers. I really enjoy all of his work. That being said, I am comfortable saying I am a huge Buffy and Angel fan. There's just so much to enjoy in all of the 254 episodes of those two shows, too much to talk about in one post, or even 100 posts.

This past summer I watched all of the Buffy seasons over again. Like my 7th or 8th time through them all. (Only beaten by how many times I have watched Mutant X) With them all fresh in my head I wanted to post a quick list of some of my favorite eps of Buffy, and why.

This is part one covering seasons 2-4. (yes I skipped season 1, I will apologize to The Master, later) First off I should say that Season 4, The Initiative Season as I call it, would be my pick for best of the first 4. Although I do not like the big bad of that season, I really enjoy all the character development and all the fun Spike moments.

Season 2 - My favorite episodes of this season are those by Joss Whedon himself. The Becoming 1+2 rank as the best of the series, to this date. Spike's role is amazing in the battle of Buffy vs. Angel. His dialogue is witty and fun. The cinematics and music behind the moment where Buffy races to the library to save Kendra, but it being too late, are breathtaking.

Season 3 - The Wish - Written by Marti Noxon. I love the different world here, where Xander and Willow are vampires. As a huge fan of The Master (you are the best thing about season one), its equally awesome to see him here, in a story where he is really in control of Sunnydale. When Buffy arrives, with the scar on her face it seals the deal for an excellent, chilling story. I love the slow mo battle as Buffy lays eyes on the Master and they each fight toward one another. Angel is dusted, and Buffy walks right through his remains (like Buck Rogers through a space ship explosion) only to get her neck snapped...wow...just wow.

Season 3 - The Zeppo - Written by Dan Vebber - I love how the whole hellmouth apocalypse story takes a back seat to Xander and his problems. I also love how they over dramatize everything Buffy and Angel say and do, furthering the reality of Xander's issues (with zombies, mind you). In the end the Scoobys save the world, and they have no idea Xander saved them.

Season 4 - Hush - Joss Whedon. Possibly the best episode of Buffy ever. Great creepy villains. Awesome plot. Great story telling. Funny moments... and all this without a word dialogue! Yes, and there is that awkward moment where the gang stares at Buffy making hand gestures that might appear a bit R Rated.

Season 4- This Years Girl + Who are you. A two parter. These eps bring back Faith and I love Faith, she is my favorite female character in the Buffyverse. In season four she is at her hottest. (although she has a line in season three where, before a fight, shes says to Buffy "give us a kiss", which is perfection). Solid two part episode, with the second part written by Whedon, that has its strengths in Faith's character... even when Sarah Michelle is playing her. The scene where Faith is in Buffy's body, practicing her lines in the mirror is hilarious.

Tales From Under The Grave - a Spooktacular Event

I was invited to take part in an event this year called Tales From Under The Grave. I was asked to write a small part of a short story that would be created by a bunch of authors and spread across some of the best book review blogs out there. I gladly accepted and finished my 500 words today.

Invited to Submit to Another New Anthology!

ENDING SUMMER NIGHTS sold

Dead Man's Party Review

Here is a review of one of my short stories I found on the internet.

In “Dead Man’s Party,” Kevin Breaux draws such a realistic picture, I could imagine the macabre outcome to be the logical aftermath of cocaine induced hallucinations. There is more science in this story than in a traditional urban fantasy. Breaux takes a look at the current problem of microbial resistance and mutation and extrapolates it in a logical fashion (zombies notwithstanding), with no expository lumps. Few Updates

The last two weeks I spent focused on my fantasy works. I spent one weekend, about twelve hours, doing some last minute tweaks to SOUL BORN, and then shipped it back off to the publisher for the big edit. Otherwise I have been writing a lot. The third book in the SOUL BORN series is still in first draft, but now at 40,000 words.

I also decided to write a prequel story to SOUL BORN, weaving a bit of untold history about one of the main characters. I will most likely offer it as a freebie when the book is released.

On a side note, I finished Dragon Age Origins this last weekend. I played as a City Elf Mage who was a blend of healing and fire offense magic. I started up a new game as a Noble Human Rogue, and a Dalish Elf Warrior. Not sure which I will continue.

Happy Holidays!

I hope everyone has a nice couple days off from work, and a pleasant Christmas with their friends and family.

I had lots of time to write this last week and no doubt, plenty more in the week to come. I finished a new short story called A WAY TO A MAN'S HEART IS THROUGH HIS STOMACH. It's a twisted little Valentine's Day Horror.... now I need to submit it around.

ONLY THE DEAD WILL STAND, my zombie cowboy short story, will be printed in the anthology, DEAD HISTORY: A ZOMBIE ANTHOLOGY. Publisher: Living Dead Press; Release Date: Spring 2010. I think they are shooting for a release date a little sooner than that, maybe even late Feb. I will announce its release here and my on my site.

It's all very exciting! The publisher actually called my cell phone last night and we talked for about forty minutes. We discussed a lot of things and I was invited to write shorts for other future anthologies.

We shall see.

ONLY THE DEAD WILL STAND - horror / western / thriller

Just finished a 5,600 word short story about an undead gunslinger who wins all his matches. This dead-alive man, called Reaper by some, is being tracked through the west by the vengeance driven son of one of the men he killed. When they meet, outside a tavern in a small town that is hosting a gun fighter's contest, the two men clash. I don't want to give too much away. Hopefully the anthology publisher who asked me to submit it will publish it in 2010. If I hear any good news I will post it.
