LBIFW Cover Creative Process by author and artist Kevin James Breaux

Hi all,

I wanted to share a bit of my creative process. I made an abbreviated post about this on my FB author page, but wanted to go in more depth here. Of course this will not be a step by step explanation, but I hope it allows readers to understand some of my work better.

About six months ago, I decided it was time to think about the cover art to my new project, THE LIFEBLOOD OF ILL-FATED WOMEN, which I often shorten to LBIFW.

At first, I went online and started to search for cover artists by genre and topic keywords. I found myself back in the same pool of artists I normally liked to search in: the Deviant Art page. (which I also have a gallery showcasing some of my art)

For this book, I actually found several artists quickly, but in the end I could not decided between two. One was an amazing digital artist doing work that was exactly what I wanted, the other was a fantasy artist whose work looked like the old 80's and 90's high and epic fantasy books I read growing up. I think this second artist had even done some concept work for Game of Thrones. So he was perfect too.

But what was right for my book, a dark fantasy - horror novel? I knew I would not be sure until each artist finished his cover for me.

I hired them both and waited. It took a few months, but the cover art was done and when I compared them I still had an issue picking. So I reached out to my friends and trusted fans. I had them pick. Would you believe it...it was almost a tie. That being said, some of the feedback I got was incredible and really helped.

The decision was made.

I started playing around with layouts. And when the book interiors were ready, and I had a sized template in hand, I was ready to go. I created MANY versions of the layout. Different fonts, different sized fonts and placement. But primarily my versions had to do with the cover art itself. I tried different tone adjustments, more contrast, extra color saturation, less color saturation, etc...

See a few of my test prints.

In the end, I picked from several of my favorites and sent a print job to Office Max. See, I was printing them in a reduced size on my ink jet at home, to examine which layouts looked best, but I could not be sure of the colors and sizes until I saw them actual size and printed on a high quality printer and on glossy paper.

So after waiting a day...yeah, that was a long wait for me, I was really anxious to see how it looked...I picked up my test print outs and saw what I was looking for. One of them was clearly better than the rest. So I submitted that file to Createspace.

The proof was shipping almost overnight. (Thanks!) I was super excited to see it and when I opened the package up I was immediately unhappy. :( The glossy cover option looked cheap and the colors were too red and too saturated. Also the glossy cover lost some of the detail. It was just too darn muddy.

This is always a test for graphic artists. It looked perfect on my monitor. Looked great in the Office Max printouts. But the Createspace printer is different. So I had to adjust for it...and I changed the cover to a matte finish. As a fine artist, I have always enjoyed matted finishes better.

I was nervous that my adjustments would not work right. But I sent the new file and about a week later(thanks holidays), the new proof arrived and it looked great.

I posted on FB...why do I doubt my graphic design skills, I have like 20 years exp. But this project is important to me, so I was nervous, I wanted the very best and I feel very good about it now.

the second proof

This is not every step of the journey I took, but hopefully it does give some insight to my creative process. I know that things will never be perfect-perfect, but I am a perfectionist and I am a skilled graphic artist. So I did my best.

This book will be released soon!

Kevin James Breaux signs books at Powell's

Hi all,

My book signing at Powell's went very well. I signed all but two of the books they supplied me. And then signed those for the store to put on the shelf.

I sat next to Brent Weeks, just like the last time I attended. I did so I could learn. Brent is a powerhouse. He was signing from start to finish.

That first photo is always the hardest. And I was in total brooding mode. :)

Here I am signing a copy of ONE SMOKING HOT FAIRY TAIL.

While there, I was approached by another book store in Oregon to do a signing in the new year.  Very cool. I hope to set something up in Jan. or Feb.

I got to talk to a lot of people and sign some books. I had a friend come visit me. All and all was a great night. (and I got a book signed by Brent to send to one of my friends/supporters) Win-Win.

Thanks!

LBIFW to be released 1/2017 by Kevin James Breaux

Hi all,

The Viking princess Astrid finds herself wandering through a strange land—with no memory of how she arrived. Her search for answers will lead to enemies, both human and demonic.

Like that teaser?

I'm excited to announce that THE LIFEBLOOD OF ILL-FATED WOMEN will be released in January 2017.

not the cover

Here's the book's official description:

Astrid the White isn’t an average princess. She has always stayed by the side of her father, King Kol, and learned warfare and weaponry from the best Vikings in the land. When she awakens in the city of Birka and hears the sounds of war, she rushes proudly into the fray. She is more than capable of taking down any enemy wishing to disturb the peace.

This enemy, however, isn’t what she expected. Before Astrid even gets outside the walls, a golden light knocks her out.

She comes to in the snow, in full battle armor. Astrid first suspects that this is a challenge from her father—or even the gods themselves. By acting correctly, she can gain the favor of Odin, the Allfather.

Astrid wants to complete the test, but it becomes more and more difficult as she explores this new part of the world and encounters both monsters and monstrous men. As creatures from the darkest legends reveal themselves, Astrid will discover that her journey isn’t about acting correctly or passing Odin’s test. It’s about pure survival. Before she can even think about finding Birka, she will have to defend herself against the demons of this new world.

Now available for pre-order! On Sale tomorrow!

ENDING SUMMER NIGHTS

I decided to release an old short story of mine in Kindle format. For $0.99 cents you can read something I enjoyed writing and was published years ago in an online magazine. It's a horror-thriller. But more thriller.

An aging hitman is hired to kill a worthless, blackmailing scumbag. After putting six slugs into his target, he realizes, this mark might be something more than he was lead to believe.

Ending Summer Nights is a work of short fiction by award-winning author Kevin James Breaux. It is horror with a supernatural twist.

Hope you all like it. It's short but fun!

Dark Water: Beaming Smile now 99 cents!

Hi all,

My award-winning horror novelette, DARK WATER: BEAMING SMILE is now .99 cents!

It's a perfect read for the season. It is scary and thrilling with elements of horror and urban fantasy.

Sarah should have left Montgomery County when she had the chance, but now it's too late. She is trapped on the rooftop of her family home which is almost completely submerged by dark flood waters. The air smells of a mixture of sewage and mold and it’s still raining. Alone with only her thoughts Sarah is mad she did not leave town years ago when she was right out of high school, before she became the one things she dreaded most; her mother.

Haunted by the reoccurrence of an eerie thumping sound, Sarah is startled when she discovers a large hairy animal, almost the size of a cow, brushing against the corner of her house. What is it? Where did it come from? What other horrors are hiding in the dark water?

Sample of a 5 star rating on Amazon.

"I'm not a big horror fan, but after a conversation with the author, he had assured me that this was not a full-out horror fest. I gave it a read and ended up being pleasantly surprised. I kept expecting something terrifyingly freaky (what with all that thumping in the night), but Kevin James Breaux managed to keep the scare-level just right. It's a story about human nature, of a person filled with thoughts of 'what-ifs' and life choices made. There is despair and regret, moments of joy, however fleeting, fear and guilt. It's also about plain and simple retribution - no matter the circumstances." -TK

Agents

Hi all,

I am asking myself the same questions a lot lately. Is it time for a new agent? Or time to go back to being un-agented? Or should I have faith my current agent will make a big move for me soon?

I was signed over two years ago based on ONE SMOKING HOT FAIRY TAIL, which I ended up self publishing after I was told it could not be sold. I really wanted it to go to TOR or DAW. Not sure why it didn't. I never really heard what those publishers thought. I never really heard which publishers read it. Not a lot of feedback at all...

I have another book series that has been waiting to be published... a Viking Age Dark Fantasy Historical Fiction Horror Thriller.... multi-genre extravaganza! I expected it to be picked up already. I has brought me lots of attention from TV and Movie people.... so why not a publisher?

So I'm left wondering, do I need a new agent to try and sell this one? Or do I self publish this one too. I'm am not sure how much longer I can wait. I am missing the mark here.

I really would love a traditional publisher. A big house. One that I can learn from. I would like the kind of treatment my mentor and friend, Jonathan Maberry gets from his publishers. So...yeah...

What to do? What to do?

Original Query Synopsis for ONE SMOKING HOT FAIRY TAIL by Kevin James Breaux

http://amzn.com/1523992352

Hi all,

I thought it would be fun to share part of the original query for OSHFT. Here is the synopsis part of the query. It can also give you some insight to the plot of the book.

This is a tale of a foul-mouthed, fairy princess after a fall from grace.  She had it all: fame, fortune, beauty… and now she is being hunted for her wings.

Hidden under her skin, visible to most only as an ornate butterfly-wing tattoo, is SABRINA LONDON’s secret. She is an otherworldly being and she has the most beautiful pair of magical, energy-based wings you will ever see.  Sabrina was living a perfect life until her boyfriend filmed a crime they were committing and the passionate sex they followed it up with—bad boy vampires tend to do that. So focused on romancing her, he lost his camera and when it was found months later, the video reached the Internet and Sabrina’s life was ruined. She lost everything except her friends.

MOSELLE ABDUL AZIZ AL GHURAIR was born of the Egyptian upper middle class. The young woman lived comfortably until a sudden change in political power made her family outcasts. While trying to flee the clutches of the new regime, her father made a dire decision, choosing death over torture or slavery—he killed his wife and child, but not before a curse was put upon them that would make Moselle return undead. Now, the sex-starved mummy-girl lives a life of leisure. Lonely and a bit bored with her immortality, her newest obsession, a human named Jackson, and friend Sabrina are the only things that keep her entertained.

ONE SMOKING HOT FAIRY TAIL is the story of otherworldly beings: fairies, windegos, mummies, elemental spirits, and more living human lives—or as close to it as they can. When events threaten their discovery, and Sabrina and Moselle find themselves smack in the middle of controversy, they must do whatever is needed to protect their identities and their loved ones.

America’s population is slowly dying due to an epidemic, and Alexander, an ancient, immortal shaman, has medicine that can heal people. It has one small side effect—Alexander’s able to control the minds of anyone taking the drug, nicknamed “dust.”

Alexander plans to take over the country once dust is released to the general public, crushing anyone who stands in the way. He needs just a little bit more of a certain magical ingredient to make the medication work properly: fairy wings.

An intelligent, stunning fairy, Sabrina was also America’s sweetheart—until a video of a crime she was involved in surfaces, nearly destroying her. A year later, she’s finally ready to step back into the spotlight. Together with her bodyguard, Mira, a water spirit in human form, Sabrina’s prepared to start over.

Things are starting to look up until she meets Alexander in a club and goes from social outcast to tortured captive in the blink of an eye. Will she be able to escape the evil shaman and his mind-controlled slaves in time to save herself and everyone she cares about?

Soul Born out of print and new works coming!

Hi all,

As of the other day, I removed SOUL BORN: Reborn edition from Amazon Kindle. So it is currently "out of print".

Why? Two reasons. It's time I start giving it away for free here on my sites. And when the time comes, also give away its sequels. Most importantly, I am about to release a MUCH MORE current work. Something that better showcases my style and skill as an author.

As many of you know, Soul Born was written long ago and had been released in other forms and via small press. It was never as perfect as I wanted it and as a perfectionist artist...that was hard to deal with. But it was a labor of love and many people enjoyed it and through it I created a fan base and many friends.

So cheers to Soul Born for its long life and its new future as a free read.

Thanks all!
