One Thousand copies of SOUL BORN: Reborn downloaded on Kindle!

Hi all,

As you all know, I listed SOUL BORN: Reborn Edition for free on Amazon for 5 days in October. I did this so Kindle lovers and newbies alike, friends and fans, EVERYONE...could download it and enjoy it as a gift from me.

Well, I decided to tweet about it basically every other day, and 2-3 times on those days I did tweet. Then, I advertised it on FB once a day on one of my pages: author, book, or personal. Lastly, I did a blog post...a quickie alerting people it was listed for free.

I did not want to flood my news feeds. Or spam anything.

To my surprise, nearly 1,000 copies were downloaded. Amazing!!!

I know a few people retweeted my tweets. THANK YOU! And a few friends of mine shared my FB posts, or wrote new ones advertising Soul Born for free. Which is VERY cool.

So I know it was not all me. I know that a good portion of these downloads are due to people sharing the word and trying to help me out. Friends and Fans of the genre.

I am honored.

Thank you all! Seriously. Thank you!

Long Summer for this author

Hi all,

I will spare you all the gruesome details, but this was...in many ways...the best and worst Summer of my life. It's weird how that can happen. Lots of growth this Summer. Maybe someday I will write a blog post about it all...

Updates:

FREE!
Dark Water: Beaming Smile is #free on Amazon Kindle right now. For only a few days. Grab it while you can.

http://amzn.com/B00S8P94WY

Soul Born will be #free Oct 12. to 16. Heads up. This is the first time that has been listed free.

The lady who contacted me years ago about about reading one of my novels to see if it could be made into a movie for a production company she worked with, well... she contacted me again and she wants all my works. I am waiting to see which one to send her first. But she was interested in all I have to offer. I am very excited about this. I am still waiting for a traditional publishing deal for either my urban fantasy or my viking historical dark fiction or even my middle grade boys horror. Need a deal soon. Like soon-soon. Like last month soon.

Contact my agent if you are a publisher.  http://www.corvisieroagency.com/

I have been up and down the top ten writers chart at Publishers Marketplace for the past two weeks. Today I am listed at #2. I love when I am listed there. It is such a great site and amazing resource for authors.

Side note:

My wife and I (and our dog) just got back from a mini vacation in the mountains of Oregon: Sunriver, Bend, Powell Butte, and Sisters. It is amazing up there. So calm and serene. We had a great time. Especially at Brasada Ranch. I hope to go back soon.

Marshmallow on vacation.
Well, I am going to get back to editing the new edition of Blood Divided...and keep hoping for a book deal soon.

Thanks all,

Kevin James Breaux One Year Anniversary at Corvisiero Literary Agency

Kevin James Breaux's logo

Last April, I signed with Marisa Corvisiero of Corvisiero Literary Agency. It was the realization of a dream. I made something that felt impossible…possible.

Oddly enough, I went about it from a totally different direction. Normally a writer sends a query to an agent, and then waits 2-3 months to hear back. Then, if they are lucky, that writer gets a partial manuscript request. They then wait another 2-3 months, maybe more. If they are super lucky they get a full request. And then they wait for the agent to read the rest of the book, if they are interested.

It can take almost a year from the time you send that first query, or, if rejected it can be pretty darn quick. I have had same day rejections to queries. It’s both nice and annoying. Nice that the agent got right back to you and there is no wait. Annoying because the rejection was so quick it feels like you were disregarded. But hey, that’s the name of the game we authors play. You have to get used to the rejections. Do you get cranky when you don’t win the lottery? No. You know that winning the lottery is a one in a million shot. Well, that’s the same with getting a literary agent. It’s a really difficult thing to do. And if/when you manage to sign with an agent, it seriously feels like winning the lotto.

Like I said, last April, I won the lottery. I signed with an agent. And not just any agent. One I had wanted to sign with for about two years prior to my query. In fact, she and her agency had helped me long ago. (I shared a post on FB from Nov. 2012, when Marisa and her agency helped me with a writing issue I was having.) So I like to think it was fate that I ended up with her.

But still, I managed to sign with an agent going  a totally different and somewhat backward way. I was getting a lot of small press offers last year (beginning of 2014). In fact, I always get a lot of small press offers. But last year this time, I got an offer from a up and coming small press that was really making waves. They wanted both of my unpublished books. At the time that was my Viking Age Dark Fantasy and my Urban Fantasy Thriller. I reached out to the agent I wanted to represent me and told her that I had offers on the table. I asked for her help. I told her I wanted to be traditionally published and I wanted to have an agent to work with to help shield me from getting taken advantage of again (again-again).

Marisa evaluated my work over the course of a few days, checked out my presence on the web and social media, and then offered to represent me. I signed the contracts on April 30th, 2014.

Normally, when you sign those contracts, the agent has already read your work and fallen in love with it. In my case, she had not read either of my books in their entirety. She had read samples, enough to know I am a skilled writer with some good ideas and plots. So after signing with me,  she had to plan to read both of my books. I write long books. Not those simple little 50K or 60K things. I always aim for 110K and then edit up or down. I handed my agent two novels, totaling over 200K. That is a lot to read for a busy person with other projects and a family.

So I had to wait.

Like I said before, the wait would normally be after sending queries and samples…before you sign. The wait would be filled with hope, but expectations of being rejected. That was not my case. I was signed already. I only had to worry about one thing: will she love my work. And she did. After reading the one book, Marisa gave me some great feedback. I was relieved and SO happy. She then read the other book, which was longer, and I know that was tough for her, but she liked it. No corrections. No changes. Wow.

But that took much of the year. As expected. But I had to keep reminding myself. She needs to read your work first before she attempts to find you a deal or in my case deals. She has to read two books, at over 200K words total first.

It took a while, but I accepted it and relaxed. I stopped worrying about the when.

People ask me all the time, “You signed with an agent a year ago…why haven’t you got a book deal yet?” And I tell them the same thing. “Relax. It’s all about timing. Finding the right deal. Striking the iron when it’s hot. My agent had to read my two books first. That took time. She knows what she’s doing. Have faith.”

I have faith.

It’s been a year. Yes. And for the year I did not have to send queries. I did not have to get rejected. I did not have to worry and wonder what is wrong with me. I got to focus on my writing and write a new book. Seriously…for the first time in many years, I was able to NOT worry or stress over finding an agent.

That’s huge.

I have learned things from the agency this year. I have learned things from the other authors represented at the agency too.

My agent now has four books of mine. A good variety to shop around. She has seen what I can do with social media; I did brand a hashtag for her. :) And she knows me better as a person now.
I know in my heart a book deal will be found in 2015.

(Yeah...I need the income...)(...however small it might be...)

Thanks all,

Kevin James Breaux finishes another book and hands it in to his agent. Now what?

What’s up? Been a while. :)

Well, I finished writing the sequel to my Urban Fantasy Thriller, ONE SMOKING HOT FAIRY TAIL, which is being represented by Marisa Corvisiero of the Corvisiero Literary Agency. http://www.corvisieroagency.com/

Yep. I made this banner. :)

It took me just under 11 months to write, edit, read, edit professionally, and read again. The final word count was over 111,000. A little longer than I expected after that final edit. But I'm happy.

I wanted to show my agent that I could do this. I wanted to show her that I could have a book ready for her (and the publishers) in less than a year.

And I did it.

My reward, a piece of character art from Kevin West. He has drawn two characters from the Soul Born Saga for me in the past. It was time to get a new piece from a character in the book I just finished. So I had him draw Sabrina, the main character.

Art by Kevin West. Sabrina from my book One Smoking Hot Fairy Tail - Kevin James Breaux

March was a very stressful month for me. Lots going on. But I finished my job and afterwards decided to take a step back for a moment. I focused on networking for a bit. Then advertised my two Kindle books, while they were on sale. Then I took a much needed break. Sadly, April started off rocky. But since I was not knee deep in any projects, I was able to focus on what was needed and face my newest challenges with no obstacles.

I think things are clearing up finally, and maybe next week, I will be back to writing full time and getting moving on the sequel to my Viking book… which I have only written about 3K words in so far.

I’ll aim to complete that book before next April.

My other goal is to re-edit BLOOD DIVIDED so I can post that up as a Kindle book in its new “Reborn” Edition.  That might take some time. I'm not sure how much work is needed on it. I have yet to build a schedule on that project…

May is nearly here. May is my wedding anniversary month. It's also the beginning of really nice weather in Oregon. And let's not forget. AVENGERS 2 comes out!!!!

I hope to be writing a lot this Summer. I hope to get a book deal soon. I would love to start getting out to some events. Hang out with some of my peers. This means you, Peter Orullian.

Anyway. I'm doing what I do best. Trying my hardest. Being patient. Learning. And learning some more. Write Makes Might!

Thanks all,

Kevin James Breaux brings SOUL BORN back in new Reborn Edition

http://amzn.com/B00SIEFG4A

Hi all,

Yep. SOUL BORN is back and all cleaned up in this new SOUL BORN: Reborn Edition.

What a journey.

I will not retell the entire publishing history... again. :) You can find it here and there on the internet and on this blog...

But, as you probably already know, when I got the rights back to Soul Born and Blood Divided in 4/2014, I knew these books had to be resurrected in some manner. So after editing Soul Born. And editing it again. And sending it to my editor. And re-reading it again... I was finally comfortable enough to send it to some trusted test readers(and fans of the series).

These people had read Soul Born before and after re-reading it, they gave lots of great new feedback. One guy, Aaron, WOW, he found all the typos my eyes would never have seen and simply read over. Thanks again, Aaron! I still owe you.

Lastly, I sent the book to some new readers who wanted to read it. They also gave some amazing and very helpful feedback. I am very fortunate.

But I was still scared to take that last step. Deep down, I wanted to re-write the book. Bring it to my current skill level... but that would have made it something new and no longer Soul Born. I could not do that to the fans of the series. I needed to get it back out there as it was originally intended, just fixed and polished.

So, after a few more weeks, I finally took that last scary step and uploaded it to Kindle.

Here's the link:

I am happy with the results... But I know it's not perfect.

DAMN, I'm so hard on myself. Those annoying perfectionist traits born from being an artist overwhelm me at times. And I get that feeling I used to get when I was drawing and doing comic book art all the time. I just want to crumble up my piece of paper and throw it away. It's just so hard to seperate the past and present. The Soul Born Saga is very much part of my past and part of those days I wish to move on from. At the same time, the book represent many lessons I have learned and friends I have made. I cannot abandon that. I cannot crumble that up. I will not throw that away.

It's my greatest hope that many of the fans of the Soul Born books will re-read this new edition. I set it up on Kindle so all readers who have the old (flawed small press) copies of the book will be able to get this new version at a great discount. I'm also running a sale in late March to further reduce the price.

I would love to hear people's thoughts. I hope the fans enjoy how I fixed things.

I will edit BLOOD DIVIDED next and re-release it in 2016. Until then, there are new versions of the e-stories popping up on my site and blogs too. Here is Soul Born Origins: Opal

Kevin James Breaux's DARK WATER: BEAMING SMILE is back!

This is a  novelette... basically a really long short story. :)

Hi all,

My award-winning supernatural-horror-thriller DARK WATER: BEAMING SMILE is once again available. Here is the link: http://amzn.com/B00S8P94WY

The publisher went out of business a year or so ago. Which was sad. This novelette was one of my favorite works. It even reached the Bram Stoker Prelim Ballot in 2011 for Long Fiction. See reading list here: http://www.horror.org/awards/2011readinglist.htm .

I decided to polish it up some and self publish it on Amazon as a Kindle Book. But at the moment, I am not sure what to do next. How do I promote this? It's basically a short story for .99. Not something to worry myself to death with. But as I said before, it won an award and reached the prelims in another award. It was even read/acted out on a internet radio show.

Here is the audio page: http://thedramapod.com/component/muscol/H/2-tim-heffernan/2-halloween-camp-fire-stories/8-halloween-stories-episode-2?Itemid=101

So this story may be one of the works I am most noted for... but with its absence from publication...

I could use some help spreading the word that it's back. So please tweet and Facebook about it. Any help or suggestions on how to promote it would be great. Thanks!

Kevin James Breaux 2014 Year in Writing

Writing Life

2014 was a different kind of year for me. In the beginning of the year, I had one goal. Just one. Get an agent. I had spent all of 2013 editing, learning, increasing my skill level--I was ready.  At the end of April, when I was just starting to doubt myself, it happened. I signed with an agent. A REALLY GOOD AGENT: Marisa A. Corvisiero of the Corvisiero Literary Agency

http://www.corvisieroagency.com/Marisa_A_Corvisiero.html

Marisa Corvisiero
After signing with her I had to re-plan my year. I did not need to spend any more time sending queries. No more time waiting for replies… So I decided it was time to write another book.  I started writing the sequel to ONE SMOKING HOT FAIRY TAIL, which was now represented and being read by Marisa.

Just a little hint.

This was a tough year for writing and it was filled with many family distractions. My wife was not feeling well most of the Summer and it was a real struggle for me at times. But we got through it all.

I was communicating with Marisa off and on. And she gave me lots of very encouraging feedback. All the while, I was climbing and holding the top ranks at Publishers Marketplace. I was doing something right. lol. Check back a few posts to read all about that.

I like to stay organized and I set a goal for myself to finish my new book at around 120K words, before X-Mas. I managed to met both. The book ended up just shy of 120K words and I was done before the New Year.

Many of you know how I write. I write like an painter paints with oils. Layer over layer over layer. So when I finished this book it was not in first draft. It was more like fifth draft. With the exception of the last three chapters. So I read and re-read them. Totally scrapped the end and re-wrote it. :)

After the New Year, I edited the entire book in one week. And as of a few days ago, the book is in the hands of Gretchen, my kick ass editor. Why? Because she is a great source of advise. She knows how I write. Knows what I want. And she knows how to keep my writing flowing when, at times, I add too much info.

So yes… my year of writing was comprised of two things. Get and agent. Write a new book. And if you have read this blog you know I am capable of SOOOO much more. That one year… I wrote an insane amount of words (like four three books worth). And in 2013 I edited three books three times!!!  So what took so long this year?

I decided to write this new book, a sequel, very carefully. I keep saying “mindful”, it’s the word of the year. I was very mindful when I wrote this book. I kept the first book close, and took lots of notes for both books. I made sure the two tied together… and then I saw it. My skill level increased. And man… did I go full-tilt erotic in this one. I mean, I often flirt with the line but don’t totally cross it. I kinda crossed it this time, and when I looked back... that line was so far away it was a blur.  And not just because my eyes are strained from staring at the computer so much….

Do I feel like I accomplished enough this year? Yes and no. I got my agent. I mean, I FINALLY got my agent. Something I have been trying to do since 1998-1999. That goal alone should make me feel like I won the year, but I am a perfectionist and I wanted more. Agent and book written? Closer. But I still wanted to end 2014 with more. Another goal completed.

I had to accept and move on.

BUT 2015…. OH my goals are huge. I want to write the sequel to THE LIFEBLOOD OF ILL-FATED WOMEN and have at least one, preferably two, book deals underway. I really want a book out so I can attend the book shows and signings that I get invited to every year. I also want to make some movement on my one comic book script. Should it be a comic or a graphic novel or another book? It reads funny as a book…. but it would look hilarious as a comic.

Creativity has never been about the money for me, but yes, I need some writer income this year.  OH MAN do I ever.

**It just occurred to me that in the beginning of the year I re-edited SOUL BORN too. While waiting on queries, I re-read and re-edited that thing the best I could while resisting the urge to entirely re-write it. If I re-wrote it, it would not have been SOUL BORN any more. YES, it would have been at my current skill level, but it would have read entirely different. So I fixed it up as best I could. It feels more like a YA Fantasy now, since I write much harder core now. It is my first book… And now that it’s fixed up and has been read by test readers, it will be reborn in Kindle format. Soon. Very soon.

So in conclusion, I am very grateful that I signed with an excellent agent who I gel with amazingly. I am also very pleased with the book I wrote this year. I just want to bring home the big win. And in 2015 I will.

Write Makes Might!

Thanks all,
